Safespaces was proud to support the DIY SOS team in transforming the family home of 11-year-old Nathan, helping to ensure he had a safe and comfortable space in his new bedroom.
The latest episode of BBC’s DIY SOS, which aired on 27 October, saw Nick Knowles and the team travel to Kidderminster to help Nathan and his family create a home that better meets their needs.
Nathan lives with complex needs, including Tuberous Sclerosis Complex type 2, autism and refractory epilepsy. He can experience up to 200 seizures a day and requires round-the-clock care. His care needs have a significant impact on the whole family, with parents Emma and John dedicating much of their time to supporting him, while his older sister, Kira, has also felt the effects of the family’s changing circumstances.
With the support of hundreds of volunteers, the DIY SOS team set out to transform the family home, creating an environment that would help keep Nathan safe while giving everyone more space to live, relax and spend time together.

Supporting Nathan and his family since 2018
Safespaces has been part of Nathan’s story for many years. We first installed his Safespace in 2018 to help protect him from injury during seizures at night, providing a safe and comfortable environment tailored to his needs.
As part of the DIY SOS rebuild, Nathan’s existing Safespace needed to be relocated to his new bedroom. Our technicians, Colin and Anthony, travelled to Kidderminster to reinstall it, helping to ensure he could continue to benefit from his familiar, supportive space in his transformed home.
A home designed around the whole family
The DIY SOS transformation was about more than rebuilding a house. It was about creating a home that better supports the needs of every family member.
For families caring for a child with complex needs, having a safe and comfortable environment can make an important difference to everyday life. Thoughtful adaptations can help meet individual needs while creating more opportunities for the whole family to spend time together.
It was wonderful to see Emma and John’s reaction to their transformed home and to witness the collective effort that made the project possible.
We are proud to have played a part in supporting Nathan and his family. A huge thank you to the DIY SOS team, our technicians Colin and Anthony, and everyone involved in bringing this special project to life.
Nathan’s story reflects the importance of creating environments that work for individuals and the people who care for them.
